DSP's Making a Difference: Ana Mercado
As part of DSP Recognition Week, FADSP is pleased to recognize direct support professionals (DSPs) who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve. Ana Mercado is one of those DSPs.
Ana Mercado has been working for Bishop Grady Villas for 13 years. Ana always puts the residents and their needs first. One example was when she recently changed the dates of her vacation so she could ensure a resident was able to have a special birthday party. Ana takes the time to know each resident and build good rapport with their families and support system.
In 2019 Ana was promoted to be the Villa Lead of the Guardian Angel Villa where she has had the opportunity to grow professionally and in her leadership skills. Ana always makes herself available not just for her villa, but to all of the residents at Bishop Grady Villas to best support their needs. She will pick up shifts, come in early, and stay late when she sees a need arise. She helps to train and mentor new DSPs to help them provide excellent service to the residents.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, she was one of the staff that acted as the “glue” that kept the team together ensuring that all of the residents were healthy and protected. She communicated effectively and advocated for each individual under her care. Aside from being an exceptional member of our team, she is also a dedicated CNA who provides care to others in the community.
Ana goes above and beyond while utilizing the NADSP Code of Ethics. She holds monthly meetings with the residents in her villa which helps with Person Centered Planning, Self-Determination, and Advocacy. Ana advocates for the needs of the residents and teaches them how to be good self-advocates. She promotes physical and emotional well-being by planning fun activities, celebrations, and encourages daily physical activity. Ana follows her training in HIPAA and keeping client confidentiality.
Ana respects the human dignity and individuality of all of the residents. She helps them to feel at home by assisting them to decorate their rooms and home in the way they choose to showcase their uniqueness. Ana goes above and beyond in integrity and responsibility. She maintains her CNA license and is always working on ways to improve and grow in her position. Ana also helps by mentoring other DSPs.
Thank you, Ana for your continued service to the individuals served at Bishop Grady Villas!
