Florida ARF & FADSP Celebrate Direct Support Professionals (DSP) Recognition Week

FADSP LogoDSP's Making a Difference: Theron Delgado

As part of DSP Recognition Week, FADSP is pleased to recognize direct support professionals (DSPs) who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve. Theron Delgado is one of those DSPs.

Theron Delgado has been serving participants at Pine Castle for 17 years. He consistently puts his best foot forward and encourages his co-workers to do the same. He believes that by working together and putting in the effort, they can be the best team possible.

Though individuals have had to stay home for a while, Theron is looking forward to getting back to work. Recently, he took the initiative to create sneeze guards for all the staff and program participants, with the goal of creating a safe and respectful space for everyone when we welcome participants back. He rallied his team and staff from other workshops to help create the guards, and in the process motivated the entire agency. Theron led the entire project, conducted research, presented the concept, perfected the construction, and purchased materials to ensure the safety of all who enter the program. Theron’s passion to ensure the well-being and integrity of Pine Castle’s program participants is clear in the dedication and endless hours he put forth in following this project through to the end.

Theron has continued to pick-up and drop-off weekly Publix donations to group home residents and staff, even during the state of emergency Florida is undergoing. He expresses sincere admiration for our participants by putting in amazing efforts across multiple Pine Castle departments. Theron proves his dedication to the agency and the participants by making selfless efforts to improve and enhance the lives of all the individuals he serves. He truly is an inspiration to the agency and plays an important role in the Pine Castle family. Theron’s positive attitude buoys those around him. He encourages other staff and the participants to focus on the good in any situation and to do the best work possible. He goes out of his way to be helpful, friendly, and respectful in his interactions.

Theron is committed to supporting Pine Castle participants. In one instance, he was able to support one of the participants he works with to achieve her goal of going on her vacation of a lifetime a reality. The individual was struggling to save the money needed for the trip, and Theron guided her with personal experience and money management professionals, giving her the tools needed to save her hard-earned money. She made her trip and was over the moon with excitement and pride in her accomplishment. Theron ensured the individual achieved all she wanted to accomplish while there and encouraged her to do the things she wanted to do.

Theron has a strong desire to do what is best for the individuals served. He holds their safety and wellbeing in high regard and focuses on showing all individuals the respect they deserve. During COVID-19, one individual had particularly difficult struggle with wanting to come back to the program. The strain of the isolation resulted in this individual crying a lot and becoming severely depressed. Theron stuck by the participant, listening and talking to him even beyond normal work hours, and has made special accommodations to ensure the participant knows they have emotional support during this critical time.

Theron presents himself as an “equality advocate” at all times, working to ensure individuals are treated with fairness and respect. He ensures that no disability or life circumstance stands in the way of listening and guiding individuals to the potential they have. He excels with individuals who are non-verbal, ensuring that their voices are heard and bringing fairness to the amount and type of activities available to them. He works to make sure everyone has the same access to contract work and equal pay.

Theron teaches and guides the participants he works with to advocate for themselves. He encourages them to work to achieve their goals. He works one-on-one with participants to ensure they feel support through tough times and challenges in reaching their goals, and he celebrates their successes with them.

Thank you, Theron, for your continued service to the individuals served at Pine Castle!
