DSP's Making a Difference: Latuya Milton
As part of DSP Recognition Week, FADSP is pleased to recognize direct support professionals (DSPs) who are making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve. Latuya Milton is one of those DSPs.
Latuya Milton, has already won the Direct Support Professional of the Year in the eyes of Community Resource Network (CRN). She goes above and beyond expectations. Latuya has been working as a direct support professional at CRN for over 10 years. She is compassionate, patient, passionate, innovative, dependable, trustworthy, and fun to be around. Latuya works seven days a week and makes it look effortless. She has a family of her own to care for but is always the first one to be at the hospital or to rearrange her schedule to accommodate the individuals she supports.
Three years ago, CRN received a phone call from hospice about a fragile little boy named A. who was a victim of shaken baby syndrome. He was blind and diagnosed with Cerebral palsy and epilepsy. A. was also nonverbal, wheelchair bound, and rarely slept. He was in desperate need of a direct support provider. After receiving the call, CRN knew Latuya was the one person who would not only provide the compassion and support A. needed, she would provide the unconditional love and consistency he deserved. A’s life changed the day Latuya became his direct support professional. He is dependent on her to provide the substantial amount of care he requires daily and she depends on seeing, his beautiful smile every day. A’s mother has expressed that she does not know what she would do without Latuya.
Latuya, is the most dedicated DSP CRN has ever seen. Her huge heart, compassion, and loyalty to the individuals she serves, is not a passion, but her calling. She is able to communicate to someone who is non-verbal and has been a voice to advocate his wants and needs. Her calm composure and patience in stressful situations is remarkable!
Latuya is innovative and uses music and instruments to excite and engage A. in daily activities. She is supportive and encourages individuals to achieve more than what they think their capabilities will allow. She maintains a strong outward presence for the ultimate benefit of the individuals she serves, despite her emotional feelings. CRN is so proud and grateful to have Latuya as a part of the CRN family. She is an inspiration to us and to the individuals she helps every day!
Thank you Latuya for your continued service to the individuals served at Community Resource Network!
